[1.080] [SP] Large drill mining has become near impossible ?

    The update 1.079 -> 1.080 seems to have drastically changed drilling behavior in my 1.079 world.
    When drilling in 1.079 you sometimes ran into an invisible wall.
    In 1.080 you seem to run into an invisible wall almost all the time, making drilling progress almost impossible.
    Anyone having similar problems ?

    yeah i have that problem too :I but my drilling ship also starts sliding around with locked landing gears (small ship)

    I have the same issue. I normally inertial mine, meaning that I have a large ship and let its inertia push the drills forward. After this patch, once my drill hits the asteroid surface, the drills mine what ever is within range. Once the area is mined, it stops. My ship inertia does not drop, so I would expect the drills to continue to push into the asteroid surface, but my ship no longer moves forward.

    Same this is wrecking my large mining ship, when you first get in the whole ship is twitching around very slowly. I previously would go up to a asteroid and set two thrusters to a thrust override of 20kn, if I do that now the ship bounces off the asteroid face. The invisible wall statement is accurate it's as if asteroids got more dense or something.

    This is on a DS, my sim speed is .7-1.0

    Confirmed. Large ship drilling is as of now impossible. Very unfortunate as this kills the game for me. Has Keen actually confirmed this problem or said anything about the reason for it?

    Not only large drills actually, I tested it with asteroids, warheads and an astronaut. Even my astronaut is hitting invisible walls and in some places I could get inside asteroid.

    Just place some 256x256x256 asteroid in front of twister thats on right side and turn it on for couple seconds. You should get same results.

    Ps.: No mods used.

    Also having this issue. currently unable to inertia mine with small or large drills. You bounce off the surface even while moving at a forward speed of 0.1 m/s. it's like you hit a clip wall until you force it forward, but then you may take some damage as a result.

    I have had this problem since 1.074 .. I love mining and now I would rather pay a late bill or get a root canal than go mining.

    Been having mining lag (sim speed plummets to .25) since 1.074 AND now have the invisible wall bug with my 7x7 large mining ship. Don't think that's an unreasonable size for a mining ship. Until this is fixed I have no reason to play this game.

    I have not been able to play for the last few weeks due to this. I get an error in my eventmanager for nvd3dumx.dll and tried updating my drivers as they have not been updated for about a year and it made it worse. The game bombs out within a minute. I was using my large drilling ship. Kind of a killer...

    I am plagued by this bug as well. But thanks to some ideas from other clever engineers on here I have come up with a design that takes care of mining for now.

    It's a silly looking thing but it works like a charm. Inside the 5x5 pointed head there's a spherical GG and just a bit behind that an artificial mass. When drilling I leave dampers on. I just carefully make a whole big enough so that it can enter steadily then I turn the arty mass on. Then I just sit back while the ship glides into the asteroid with almost erotic ease :). I've got sensors at the back and some light flashing when it's gone full length down. It then turns off mass, gravity and drills. The idea is to have a setup with two or three so that I can move around and place them while the others work. It's got almost 270 small containers I think, six small reactors, four gyros, five ore detectors and of course remote control. The forward thrusters are build inside with four blocks free space ahead towards heavy armor blocks. Works flawlessly and never breaks.

    Yeah, some weird thing happened to me while mining (no photos, but I can try to reproduce):

    In Creative, I was testing a Large Drill design for full asteroid boring (trespass an asteroid with minimal collision). I came up with a design that had a 7x7 cross-shaped, pyramid-like Drill head, a built-in Refinery with 4 Productivity modules attached and a Medbay. I was drilling and hitting the invisible wall multiple times, until I forced my way into the asteroid and, all of a sudden the ship twisted and merged into the asteroid, provoking some massive collision in the Drill head (1/3 of the Drill was gone inside the asteroid and 1/3 was flying into space). I'll try to reproduce and post some pics.

    any news on this damn bug ?

    As mining is the main aspect of the game for most and as many love creating "worms" to eat the apple, i would think this should be top priority thought in 8 days no news from any devs..

    Awesome game though. I'm still playing. But i would really enjoy to get back at my worm instead of improving my stations.

    I've seen no acknowledgement of said problem so far.
    No offense intended, i realize it may involve things like optimizing - for future planets and what not - but please give us an explanation.

    i tried tor aise their attention on facebook. No results so far..

    As for drilling, i found an alternative. At least it gave me the opportunity to try out other way to drill.

    so far i made a ship that work kinda like an excavator. A long arm covered of drill fixed to a rotor. Rotor set to turn a no more than 0.2RPM (faster it will break because of the wall, below you don't hit the wall at all. I also tried the usual worm a minimum speed and still i hit the wall.)

    the rotor is set to go from 15° to 220° so the arm is 25 block long, this way when it reach 220° it doesn't break the front of the ship. I setup the cockpit next to the rotor, at least i can see what happens.

    In about 10 min i'll drill a hole quite big and deep and i'll have about 10 million kilos of ores. Mainly stone because that's what cover the asteroids most of the time. In several pass you can drill completely a small asteroid. A big one will take ages though.

    In the mean time i forgot about drilling my base into an asteroid. There is no way to use my worm to drill corridors and room that have a good shape and hand drilling is to unprecid and too slow so i only use it until i got a drilling ship.

    As of 1.083. 009 This bug does still exist. It has made two people i know stop playing this game entirely. I have a 30 mil kg miner that did not have issues before 3009, but others in my game did. I was hosting on my personal pc. i turned my pc into dedicated server during 3008 and still no issues for me, however upon 3009, it now does same for me. My miner cannot do more than scrape surface and stop. got frustrated and rammed the asteroid at 10m/s (with 30 mil kg that is a lot of force). It lagged and i penetrated a little and stopped and something interesting happened. when i tried to back up, i was INSIDE the invisible wall. It tore off front of my ship when i reversed and I captured a pic of the wall.

    no drilling mods were loaded. Also drills that broke off were sparking as though they were contacting normal blocks instead of ore. Possibly some of the ore is registering as blocks instead of ore? That would explain why we couldn't mine.

    I found a fix for the drills hitting the invisible wall and made a pull request on github. Hopefully keen will accept it or make a better fix.

    When I tested it I could mine at the speed of 2 m/s without getting hit by the wall. It slowly dropped to 1 m/s which I believe is caused by the floating rocks hitting the hull. Increasing drills mining area could potentially fix that problem. I did not have much time to look the code recarding this issue, but will continue hunting it when I come back from my vacation in a week.

    It is not. It is related to the particles spawned when drills hit the rock. I managed to get the fps drop significantly lower and it made drilling actually viable. I still need to optimize it further for very large drill rigs.

    Alright, that's long enough to not hear from the devs. It isn't specifically meant to solve this problem, but the Lagless Drills mod is probably worth a try. I have a mega drill ship with an 11x11 grid of drills and collectors.
    I've been lagging to hell using this ship since this issue showed up, but yesterday I did a complete run through an asteroid with the only problem being the ship slowing down for no reason (dampeners off).
    No invisible walls. No freezes. Sim speed only went down to about 0.4 (old PC).

    It's definitely worth a look while this problem is worked on with the vanilla game.
