I have questions: Where is the server located?
    Are antennas considered as beacon?

I've been trying to get on here, but my connection is only 25/10 and Desolation is unplayable with 15 - 30 players online, latency is in the 120000ms range. I don't know if it's just my connection, or my location. (Ontario)

What are we all retarded in here?

It's called TRIANGULATION because TRIANGLES HAVE THREE POINTS, X,Y,Z.

Now that that's out of the way, you can't have 2 positions that have the same coords and AREN'T the same space... you don't need a 4th beacon to tell you which side of the plane you're on.

So the center of the map is 900,900,900. So for all intents and purposes that's equal to 0,0,0.

Anything 900+ is positive, and anything 900- is negative, so 899 Z is DOWN. 901 Z is up.

So anything pro 900 is on the TOP side of the Z plane divider, anything sub 900 is on the BOTTOM side of the Z plane divider. The same can be said for X/Y. X = width, y = length and z = height. So anything 901+ X is on the right side of the width plane and anything 899- X is on the left side of the width plane. Anything 901+ Y is forward from the center of the length/depth plane, and anything 899- Y is backwards from the center on the length/depth plane. So if you take space which is an infinite box, and carve it up into quadrants, that's 4 grid boxes, Alpha/Beta/Delta/Cappa quadrants, you'd see that you'd be able to tell with extreme precision the exact location of what quadrant each set of coords is. There can't be two.

So 945x,945y,945z can only exist in ONE section of space. This is called THREE DIMENSIONS. You don't need a 4th to navigate THREE. Lets say you wanted to invert the Z axis on these coords, to be on the BOTTOM side of the plane, the coords would look as follows, 945x,945y,855z.

    So again;
945x,945y,945z TOP of the z plane
945x,945y,855z BOTTOM of the z plane

Same position, X,Y, different position Z, telling you WHICH SIDE OF THE EFFING PLANE you're on.

They CANNOT be the same spot, this is impossible. It also matter NOT how far away you are, it changes absolutely nothing until you get to the point of the beacon. So this coords system will work 100% flawlessly unless you go all the way out to a beacon and zero it's coord... presumably you can't go passed 0, if you could you'd still be able to use the beacons to position space, because the numbers would just switch over to negatives which would still give you enough reference to figure out where in space you actually are.

You can't be the same distance from 3 different beacons set up on the X,Y,Z axis and be in two different spots. It's just not possible.

    It's REALLY REALLY REALLY simple.

In fact, ALL 3D modeling programs use X,Y,Z coords -- 3DS Max, Maya, Lightwave 3D, Cinema 4D... all of them -- because this is HOW you navigate 3D space. The only difference between these is 0,0,0 is the center, where as in Space engineers, 900,900,900 is the equivalent to 0,0,0. So to zero out in SE, you essentially just go to 900,000, 900,000, 900,000, that puts you smack in the dead center of the map.

If you want to orient your self to TRUE direction, you will face AWAY from Y, with X on the Right and Z smack in the middle on the top of your screen.

If 0,0,0 puts you in the bottom left corner of the cube space, than 1,800,000,1,800,000,1,800,000 is the top right corner of the cube space. Or the other end of the map, corner to corner.

    P.S.

Traingulation is COORDINATES IN 3 DIMENSIONS. COORDINATES ARE IN 2 DIMENSIONS, Longitude/Latitude --where as, Triangulation is in THREE dimensions, Longitude/Latitude + Zenith Angle [Or Z axis position.]

Wow such passion, but you are wrong.

If the only data you have is the distance to X distance to Y and Distance to Z, there are 2 solvable points mathematically in 3d space.

    Ill explain it like this

Take a piece of paper, draw a line. This line represents 1 dimensional space, it only has one dimension.

Put a single point on this line, this is the location we want to find

Now put a second point on this line, then take a compass and draw a circle so it intersects your original point.

Note that this circle intersects the line twice, not once. So how do we figure out which of the 2 points in this one dimensional space is the right point? Put a second point on the line and draw a circle so it intersects the point you want to find, now you have 2 points, with set distance values that gives you a SINGLE result

Now lets take this to two dimensional space.

Take some graph paper, put a point anywhere on the paper, then put a second point some distance away, again, take a compass and draw a circle on the piece of paper so it intersects your original point. Now with only one reference point and one circle, our result can be anywhere along that circle, an infinite number of points. Now place another point, and take a compass and draw a circle intersecting the original point. This circle will cross the other circle two times, giving us two answers to the problem. Repeat the process again with one more circle, and now you have one answer.

So in 1d space you need 2 points to triangulate
in 2d space you need 3 points to triangulate
so in 3d space you need ? points to triangulate

    The answer is 4.

The reason that triangulation on earth only requires 3 points is simple, the other result is in outer space or in the mantle, so that result is simply discarded.

But GPS requires sync with 4 sat's to give you an accurate result. Why is that if triangulation would only require 3 pings?

But for locating things like earthquake epicenters they usually want a minimum of 4 stations reporting the earthquake to get an accurate read of the exact point it started.

The reason 3ds and maya etc are using 3 coordinates, is because they are coordinates, not triangulation pings. They are different.

If you want to read more about it look up some 3 dimensional vector math. If you attempt to solve for your position with only 3 distances, you indeed get 2 results.

In Maya and 3ds and game coordinates general, x, y, and z stand for the distance between you and the x, y, and z = 0 plane. But Beacons labeled x, y, z are not pointing to the plane, but a singular point in space, thus it is less accurate than 3d coordinates.

The reason it works when you put the beacons far enough away, is that the second valid mathematical result is outside the 50km or 100km map range, or most players use a 4th reference without realizing it, like an asteroid's orientation.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System#Basic_concept_of_GPS

I'm also going to put in another point for specifically space engineers that got covered earlier in the thread, it is possible in the game to get an exact position from 2 or 3 points of reference because you know the direction the pings are coming from. Simply writing the distance of X Y and Z on a piece of paper results in 2 outcomes, but if you also write down the orientation of the beacons you can rule out the second result, resulting in one result.

Anyway @TheMap I keep intending on stopping by, maybe I can swing by later today.

    Are you with a Faction/Group?
I will be joining with my sister and maybe one or two others. That is if i can convince them. We were planning on starting our own group

Will you abide by our server rules?
Yeah, one of the reasons I'm interested in this server is the rules

Do you understand you can be banned at anytime regardless of status?
    yeah

I do have a question. Are all the values for the stuff like grinding, welding, assembling, refining at default or are they x3 or x10? The original post didn't give any specifics on things like these.
