    That is "adaptive optics" settings, if I am correct- the effect of your eyes "adjusting" to light conditions, with a noticeable delay to adaptation as in real life as your vision "adjusts". It causes the "uncanny valley" effect and feels weird because it is much more rapid than how our eyes work in real life.

    But then, we are represented by Medbay printed androids/clones... maybe their eyes really DO work in this oddly mechanical way.

    It's not eye adaptation. It's ambient light adaptation. A way to make dark caves dark, and open plains brighter due to ambient light, as it would in the real world.
