I too remember discovering the joy of the first use of a warhead.
aah the joys of "what does THIS button do?"
Warheads are interesting critters. Put them in the a planet, moon, or asteroid and you get a beautifully crafted spherical void that's reminiscent of the damage sphere caused by a Star Wars thermal detonator. But put that same warhead in a ship or station and the damage is erratic. Maybe blowing up "ground" results in a smooth crater because the ground is homogeneous whereas, for the most part, ships and stations are not. But a warhead's damage pattern has always seemed inconsistent to me.

Yes, of course, there is the "Lord Clang" factor to consider.
