    Problem:

Extremly lengthy and boring threads, filled with prolonged rants, arguments and insults.

    Cause:

The natural human compulsion to get your point across and to be seen to be right.

    Resolution:

I suggest the addition of a button called 'The Final Say.." that every forum user can click, while writing their latest informative and comprehensive point-of-view on their subject of choice.

Once clicked, that same user should then be unable to see or search for any further comments by any other users relating to that thread, ever, and it should prevent them from adding to, deleting or editing any of their previous comments in that thread. They should then see a message below their last comment, preferably in big writing, saying something like.

YOU HAD THE FINAL SAY! NO-ONE CAN DISPUTE YOUR CONCISE AND DEEPLY RATIONAL ARGUMENTS NOW. YOU ARE TRULY A HERO OF THE TRUTH!

Everyone else in the thread, should be able to continue as before, however they should see the message below, attached to the last comment of the self-exiled poster:

This user had The Final Say. They were probably talking complete rubbish, but since they can no longer see any new messages in this thread it's pointless trying to bait them any further. Still.. if you believe that what they said really was total bollocks, then feel free to explain why here, before clicking 'The Final Say..' button.

As an added incentive to use it, you could introduce a new 5 point trophy, "Hero of The Truth!" for anyone who had clicked on the button 1000 times in separate posts. :)
